Gaining the lead on lap 11 when pacesetter Justin Randall got hooked together with a lapped car and flipped in turn 2, Pat Henesey won the 20 lap NADCAR Dwarf Car main event as Prescott Valley Raceway opened for it’s second season of operation on Saturday afternoon. Larry Stewart ran second and Randall charged back to third after pitting to change a flat tire following his flip. Steve Rezek was a wire to wire winner in the 20 lap pure stock main event. Geoff Hatch blew a hose challenging for the lead and 2004 champion Ryan Roath finished second ahead of Ed Parry. Having been called for a jump start the first time that he took the lead, Doug Clements regained the lead on lap 11 and drove to a win in the 20 lap mini stock main event. Clements gained the top spot when Ray Bramlet spun. Bramlet charged back to regain the lead but broke and Clements was out front at the checkered flag ahead of Ray Taylor and Rob Butcher. There were 20 dwarf cars on hand and they were split into three heat races. P Henesey outraced Mike Dunn and Ron Neville in heat 1 and Randall won heat 2 ahead of Stewart and K C Click. Matt Lund won heat 3 with Helen Henesey second ahead of Tom Peck. Only 16 cars made the call for the 20 lap feature. The heat winners started up front and Randall turned his outside front row start into an early lead over P Henesey. In just four laps, they were in lapped traffic. On lap 8, Click and Kitmandoo tangled for a yellow flag. Randall was leading when he tangled with the lapped car and flipped on lap 11. He made a quick trip to the pits, changed a tire and rejoined the back of the pack. P Henesey now led with M Dunn in second. M Dunn had problems and a yellow with 3 laps to run tightened the pack. P Henesey stayed out front for the win with Stewart second ahead of the hard charging Randall. Neville ran fourth ahead of H Henesey, Butch Dunn, Tom Peck, Scott Ward, Mike Witt and Lund. The 13 pure stocks were divided into two heat races. Bill Moore Jr won the first ahead of Hatch and former mini stock racer Parry. Mark McWorthy captured heat 2 ahead of Brad Bartsch and Wayne Bishop. Rezek took a quick lead in the feature over Ron Hull. Hatch passed Hull for second on lap 5. The yellow fell on lap 6 as Bishop caught fire in turn 3. He was unhurt. Rezek continued to lead with Hatch and Roath battling for second. Roath made the pass for second on lap 9, but lost it back to Hatch on lap 11. With 3 laps to run, Hatch blew a hose and Rezek was out front for the whole 20 laps. Roath ran second ahead of Parry, Bartsch, Hull, Tommy Utts, Moore and Bob Sanders. Eleven mini stocks checked in and ten survived to race in their two heats and the feature. Bramlet and Clements ran 1-2 in heat 1 and Carl Riley captured heat 2 ahead of Terry McCraw. Wendall Croy led the first 3 laps of the main event before Kent Ewart spun for a yellow flag. On the restart, Clements was the new leader over McCraw, but he had jumped the start. The next yellow on lap 7 saw Clements penalized back to third behind Bramlet and Croy. Leader Bramlet spun for a lap 11 yellow and Clements was back in the lead. Bramlet showed his strength by charging back to regain the top spot only to break in the closing laps. Clements was back out front and he won ahead of Ray Taylor, Rob Butcher, Amy Edwards and Croy. Veteran race director Sandy Combs is now in charge at Prescott Valley Raceway. The track has cancelled their May 14 date to not conflict with a motocross event at the Fairgrounds. There is one more day race on May 21 featuring the IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks and dwarf cars then racing moves to Saturday nights on May 28.
