WELKER WIRE TO WIRE Prescott Valley, AZ --The first night race of 2005 at Prescott Valley Speedway featured the first 2005 visit by the AMRA Midgets. After a second in his heat and a third in the dash, Mike Welker was a wire to wire winner in the feature action. Race long second John Sarna pulled off the track on the final lap and Bugs Norbury finished second ahead of Dustin Burkhart. With just 3 laps to run, Hank Logue drove around Corey Mendoza to win the 20 lap pure stock main event. Mendoza did salvage second ahead of Patrick Shumaker. After a contact pass around Ray Bramlet with three laps to run, Shayne Durrance won the mini stock feature in his first 2005 appearance. He also won his heat and the other heat winner Doug Clements ran second as Bramlet salvaged third. The midgets appeared with 15 cars but only a dozen survived to start their feature action. Cole Heuser was the dash winner ahead of Mike Courtney and Welker. Sarna had won heat 1 over Welker and Darrin Bolton. Norbury captured heat 2 over Darin Fala and Courtney. Welker took a quick lead in the feature over Sarna. They ran all green until lap 13 when a red stopped the action as Stevie Sussex flipped into the turn 1 fence. He was unhurt. Amy Maris spun to force a yellow with just two laps to run. Race long second Sarna broke and pulled off the track on the final lap as race long leader Welker won ahead of Norbury, Burkhart, Bolton, young Chad Boat, Courtney, Houser and Tony Osuch. The pure stocks split an 18 car turnout into a pair of heat races. Jason George won the first over Ed Parry and Canyon Raceway regular Patrick Shumaker. Logue had a perfect night as he won heat 2 over Mendoza and Steve Rezek. A tangle between Parry and Michael Davis forced a restart in the 20 lap feature. Mendoza was the early leader over George. Debris forced a lap 4 yellow and George pitted. Logue was now second with P Shumaker in the three way duel for the lead. At the half way mark, P Shumaker passed both Mendoza and Logue for the top spot. With five laps to run, it was Mendoza back out front but Logue took command for the first time on lap 18. Logue won ahead of Mendoza and P Shumaker. Bill Moore Jr was fourth ahead of Rezek, Ron Hull, Parry, Wayne Bishop and Steve Shumaker. There were 13 mini stocks, but both Wendall Croy and Shane Slay were done early. Clements won heat 1 over Terry McCraw and Kent Ewart. Durrance won heat 2 ahead of Bramlet and Sam Cutlip. Bramlet led first in their 20 lap feature. Harley Miner stalled for a lap 2 yellow. Durrance was racing on the rear bumper of Bramlet when another yellow appeared at midrace. With three laps to run, Durrance and Bramlet got tangled up and Bramlet darted into the infield. Durrance led those final 3 laps for the win over Clements and Bramlet recovered to finish third ahead of McCraw, Fritz Croy, Ray Taylor and Ewart.
